Image Slider using HTML and CSS

Image sliders are commonly referred to as carousels which are common element on websites for attractively and interactively showing several photos or bits of material. We will discover how to make a straightforward picture slider using HTML and CSS in this article.

Step 1: Setting Up the HTML Structure

To create image slider start by setting up the basic HTML structure. For this you need to create new HTML file that contains the HTML code given below.

Code:

By using a container div (slider) for storing three slides and each of which has an img element with a source (src) attribute linking to a different picture that we have developed a simple HTML structure.

Step 2: Styling with CSS

The above given HTML code is used to provide structure only but to make it attractive we add CSS styling. For the styling to take place create a new CSS file and paste the code given below.

Code:

Here we have given our slider some fundamental style. The slider has been centered on the page using a flexbox layout and styles have been added to make sure the photos fit their appropriate containers.

Step 3: Adding JavaScript (Optional)

JavaScript can be used to add the functionality and with the help of JavaScript we can easily navigate between the slides. Add the code given below by creating the new JavaScript file.

Code:

This JavaScript code configures the sliders fundamental navigation. The slides progress automatically every three seconds but you may also manually go to the next and previous slides.

Advantages of Image Sliders

  • Visual Appeal: Image sliders offer an unique and eye-catching approach to display several photos or information items in a small space.
  • Space Efficiency: They make it perfect for websites with limited space by allowing you to show many different pieces of content in a small area.
  • Content Highlighting: Sliders may be used to draw attention to certain messages and emphasize important details or promotions.
  • Interactivity: Some sliders may have interactive components such as buttons or navigation controls that let users move about the material on their own.
  • User Engagement: By engaging with the slider they may encourage people to participate with the website and enhance engagement.
  • Versatility: Image sliders may be used for a variety of things like highlighting important aspects of events or product characteristics.

Disadvantages of Image Sliders

  • User Experience Impact: Sliders may lead to poor user experience if they are set to auto advance too quickly or if users find it hard to track the path.
  • Performance Issues: Usage of large image files or many images in slider may cause increase in website's loading time which may lead to higher bounce rates.
  • Accessibility Concerns: Users who use screen readers or other forms of accessibility software may have trouble using image sliders. Alternative text must be provided and the slider must be keyboard accessible.
  • Less Effective on Mobile: Sliders can be less effective on mobile devices where screen space is limited, and users may not interact with them in the same way as on desktop.
  • Banner Blindness: Users may develop "banner blindness," where they ignore or overlook the slider altogether, especially if it's perceived as advertising.
  • SEO Implications: If not implemented properly, image sliders can have SEO implications. Search engines might have difficulty crawling and indexing the content within sliders, potentially affecting search rankings.

Conclusion

In conclusion, while image sliders can be a valuable tool for showcasing content in an engaging way, they should be used judiciously and with consideration for the user experience. It's important to balance their benefits with potential drawbacks and implement best practices to maximize their effectiveness.
