Digital Foundry | DF Weekly: can the new RTX 5070 really match RTX 4090 performance?
Nvidia says yes, but the reality is more nuanced - and AI is doing the heavy-lifting.
This week's Digital Foundry Direct comes straight from Las Vegas, where Oliver Mackenzie and Alex Battaglia share their impressions on the technologies revealed on the showfloor - kicking off with an overview of the Nvidia RTX 50-series reveal keynote. It's a claim in that presentation that I'm going to tackle in this week's blog. Is the upcoming RTX 5070 really offering RTX 4090 series 'performance'? Based on established parlance, the answer is - of course - no, but the reasons behind the claim are straightforward enough and prescient of the era to follow: big leaps in frame-rate via hardware are diminishing and, like it or not, the future is biased more towards software, with machine learning taking a leading role.

Feature | The pressure of success: Citizen Sleeper 2 and the mission to expand RPGs
"It's not a pressure I want to run away from."
Success and fame are things I imagine any game developer might want. We live in a world where more games are released each year than ever before, all of them rushing by in a frothing torrent of competition, fighting for air and a branch that will hoist them above and get them noticed. Few grasp it, but Citizen Sleeper most certainly did.

Digital Foundry | The new Grand Theft Auto 3 Dreamcast port is an astonishing achievement
But how does it stack up against the original PS2 version?
The Dreamcast burned brightly from 1998 to 2001 but Sega's financial situation famously ended its life early. As a result, many games - both announced and unannounced - were abruptly cancelled and as new games arrived on other platforms, many often wondered, would these titles have been possible on Dreamcast? Well, with an unofficial homebrew release of Grand Theft Auto 3 on the classic Sega machine, we finally have an answer for at least one of those questions.

Retrospective | Arkane's Prey built a world where I really cared about the choices I made
In plain sight.
It's lonely in the future. Trust me, I've been there. For the last few weeks, I've been replaying Arkane Austin's Prey, an immersive sim in which you explore a space station orbiting the moon. You're trying to find out what went wrong - and why the whole place is overrun by hostile aliens. It's an interesting tone, though. Despite the space station being hectic with nasty life, you spend a lot of time on your own - and yet that doesn't mean there's no sense of humanity to the game.
